Suggestions?

Last year our school district cancelled the advanced program for reading and writing in the elementary schools. Stupid budget cuts.

Anyway, our kids read a lot all the time, so I'm not really worried about that. But last night Benjamin asked Todd if we could "homeschool" him for Language Arts EPP.

I'm looking for book suggestions for an advanced 9 year old reader with some tie-ins. (Visits, projects, etc.)

Right now he's reading "Chasing Vermeer" by Blue Balliett, so I'm thinking about a project about the artist, or maybe even a trip to a museum that has some Vermeer. Not that any spring immediately to mind, but I'm sure I can find one. Maybe even a little jaunt up to Chicago to get a feel for the University area. I don't know yet for sure.

Any thoughts, advice, suggestions?

I can't believe they cut those programs! Some books Taylor's enjoyed besides the really obvious ones (i.e. Harry Potter):
The Great Brain series
Leven Thumps
Fablehaven
39 Clues series
Peter and the Starcatchers
Taylor read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and the Giver last year in his school...both books with lots to talk about.
I'm sure there are lots of great historical fiction books you could use to tie in some history (maybe Johnny Tremain or My Brother Sam is Dead) or then biographies. I don't have a lot of recommendations for those.
Good luck.

I have so many good memories of language arts EPP (you know I went to Worthington Schools right). I feel personally affronted that they canceled it. Come on Worthington.

Anne Marie- thanks for the suggestions. We've read a few of those. I'd forgotten about Peter and the Starcatchers... thanks!

Jessica- they still have Math EPP, and now it's all year long instead of in six week cycles. The regular classroom teachers were given all of the materials from language arts EPP and are supposed to figure out how to incorporate it in. Also, they aren't making EPP available until 3rd grade. This is going to be a problem for Nathaniel with math since his teacher is already giving him harder math home work than many of his peers.

The whole thing makes me grouchy. But, Todd and I are both avid readers and writers, so I think we'll be able to help on that front. The math will have to be all Todd. ;)
